a few favorite things

1. Brown paper... not because it's recyclable:)  I just love the color, texture and the fact that it's so much more forgiving than regular paper. Below are the case things for discs I send out. (I'm trying to ignore my crooked lines...)

2. That satisfying feeling I get when I print personal photos...
There's a Walgreens pretty close to my house, so when I want to get 4x6s to put in a photo album I just order online then run over to pick them up after an hour or so. Quality is questionable for bigger prints, but I love using them for the small stuff. Here is a little stack I ordered to send to my aunt. Depicted below is my cousin, Gabriella. Isn't she cute? Underneath are some random pictures I took while visiting them in August.
(And yes, mom, I will update our family's album!)

3. Rocks... you wouldn't think rocks and cameras would get along very well, but they do. Simply put, rocks are a photographer's best friend. See pictures below. (I forgot to post them when I showed you my last photoshoot!)
Well, there are my three Friday favorites...what are yours?

a few shots from this summer, and a confession

Out of the 7000 photos I took this summer, here are a few favorites that haven't made it on the blog yet. (If you're friends with me on facebook however, it's all old stuff:)

Seriously, though. I take so many photos. It's embarrassing! Remember that cat show I participated in when I was little that I always reference? It was there I met people who wouldn't tell me how many cats they had. They looked uncomfortable and mumbled something along the lines of "enough to love."

But no, I'm not trying to run my own Truman Show here. A lot of the pictures were from photoshoots, so it's not like I stalk my brothers and sisters all day.

I don't really know how much it would cost to print all 7000 of those, and I honestly don't want to find out. I could probably wallpaper my room with all my mess-ups and still have stack of albums. Like Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Who Would Not Take The Garbage Out, I was forced to sit down last week and delete approximately 2000 photos. (Admittedly, that was a bad analogy, because unless Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout was in a wheelchair, I doubt she had the privilege of sitting down.)

I was sick anyway so it didn't really matter if I became a computer zombie.

Well, there's my confession. Photography is so amazing. If I were an artist in the tradition brush-and-paper sense, I'd probably have carpal tunnel and hordes of environmentalists coming after me due to all the trees sacrificed for my artistic exploits. Cheery thought?

So, because I don't do posts like this very often, I'm going to list a few interesting things which have happened to me and my family recently.
  • Hamilton died of a most gruesome disease that only hamsters get. I will spare you the details. I feel a little sad every time I smell the air freshener we used when he was still alive. One day last week I even felt a little sad when I smelled my shampoo, because it reminded me of his air freshener. (NOTE THE FACT THAT AIR FRESHENERS AND HAMSTERS GO TOGETHER REALLY WELL)
  • I'm taking PE at school this year. On the first day I ran further than I ever have before (which IS NOT saying much). I experienced that intoxicating feeling you get while running down the street huffing and puffing while people driving past roll down their windows and yell things at you.
  • Today I toured a life-size model of the Tent Of Meeting, as described in the Old Testament. Amazing. I doubt the Israelites experienced September monsoons like we do here in Oregon, but the overall experience was great.
  • My ten-year-old brother thinks I don't really do school. "You don't do penmanship! You don't do spelling lists! You don't do book reports!" I tried explaining that philosophy outlines take a decent amount of brain energy, but he just wasn't buying my excuse.
I hope you all have a good week!

september rain

There is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.- John Ruskin

Even though it was raining, the twins (in matching hoodies!) and I ventured outside today. They found a huge worm, and I found some really good light. I know, you probably think that's the only thing I care about anymore:)
Actually I do think a lot about light. It's not one of those things you can master by just reading a textbook or tutorial. I make a lot of mess-ups on sunny days by not addressing shadow issues, etc. That's why rainy days are so kind to me. The bright light is muted and diffused, and the photographic results are in my opinion, dreamy.

September rain is the best.

My black ballet flats...
Everything is mossy and dripping here now. It's nice. I love doing my homework in the afternoon while listening to steady rain, and relaxing in the evening to the sound of train horns in the damp, dark distance.
